White Silk Floss - Chorisia Insignis

This is a close relative of the Silk Floss tree (C. Speciosa). Like its cousin this tree has an ornate flower and very pronounced thorns that cover its trunk and branches. The tree below is a large Chorisia Insignis that is located close to the "Plaza de la Marina" in Malaga, Spain. At the base this tree is more than one meter in diameter.

  2. the photo of the giant Chorisia in Malaga, Spain blew me away. Thanks so much for posting. I am nurturing 2 year old trees in Santa Barbara. There are several beautiful specimens in town with trunks 1/3 that size. Is this commonly grown in Spain?

  3. yes they are fairly common in the South of Spain along the Mediterranean coast especially in Málaga. The reason there are large specimens of tropical trees in Málaga is that there were several wealthy families in the city who owned shipping companies. about 150-200 years ago interest in botany began to increase and these families had many tropical plants and trees brought back by their ships from the tropical regions. Each of the families planted all kinds of these plants and trees on their estates most of which today are public parks and gardens in Málaga.
