The house where I grew up had two Blue Jacaranda trees in the yard. The larger of the two was in the front, right outside my bedroom window. Every morning at about 5:30 a group of screeching parakeets would land in the tree and make a terrible racket for about 15 minutes. As a boy I used to climb this tree a lot and even build myself a small tree fort in the tree.
The seedpods of the Blue Jacaranda pop open when they dry allowing the seeds to fall out.
The Blue Jacaranda flower is composed of a cluster of light blue bell shaped flowers. The tree below is near to the Malaga city hall building.

ReplyDeleteGosh, what a treat it must have been to welcome a blooming tree outside your window every year. I didn't grow up with Jacaranda's but my first year in LA, I remember being so amazed by how lovely they are. I'll miss them if I ever move.

I and have a jacaranda tree that is about 11-12 years old. It's approximately 20 feet tall. Thus far it has never, ever bloomed. I'm very disappointed, to say the least.
I'm not sure of the species of my tree, but assume it's mimosifolia. This spring I purchased a 3 gallon Jacaranda mimosifolia that the seller told me it would flower for sure, probably the spring of 2011; my new tree has grown quite well since planting it about two months ago.
In any event, what could be the problem with my 12 year old jacaranda tree not flowering? Will it ever flower?
Jacarandas are native to southeast Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

There are streets in Porto Alegre completely covered by blue flowered Jacarandas.
