Indian Bean Tree - Catalpa bignonioides

Valued for its showy flowers this ornamental tree also serves as a great shade tree with its large graceful leaves. It is native to the Southern United States but has been widely planted in other countries in gardens and parks.

  1. This is an excellent tree for shade. I live in Belgium and have five of them planted five meters apart. In February, the main branches are headed to within 15 centimeters of the trunk. By June, the new shoots area at least two meters long and the entire tree looks likes a giant lush lollipop. By heading the tree each year, the trunks are forced to enlarge, creating a stronger base.

  2. I have this tree growing in my backyard and, didn't know what it was until I researched it online. It's a beautiful tree. Are those long pods dangerous for dogs? Are they edable? Please let me know. I live in Long Island, NY. Thanks.

  3. I have a tree that matches the flowers & leaves except no bean pods....I live in Ontario Canada...just looking for more information on this beautiful tree. The leaves don't come out until late May early June. The tree did not flower last year but is this year at the end of June.
